Is Grammarly safe?

Short answer: for most people, yes. Grammarly is an established product from a company that publishes its security audits and says it does not sell what you write.

The real question is narrower. To underline mistakes as you type, a tool has to receive your text as you type it. Whether that suits you depends on what you write and where. Below is what Grammarly's own pages say, so you can decide for yourself.

What Grammarly's own pages say

  • Audits and certifications. Their security page lists a SOC 2 (Type 2) report and ISO 27001 certification, among others.
  • Encryption. The same page describes TLS for data on the move and AES-256 for data at rest.
  • Selling data. Their trust center says they do not and will not sell the content you upload to their products, and that they make money from subscriptions.
  • AI training. The trust center says you can opt out of your content being used to train their models, in your account settings.
  • Outside testing. The security page describes a public bug bounty programme for security researchers.
  • Who is behind it. The privacy policy is now published by Superhuman Platform Inc., the name the company behind Grammarly goes by today.

All of this is taken from Grammarly's own pages as they read in October 2026. Policies change, so read the linked pages yourself before you rely on any of it.

What always on means in practice

Grammarly checks your writing while you write. That only works if the text in the field reaches its servers as you go. Their privacy policy puts it as the content you upload or enable their products to access. This is not a flaw. It is how any live checker has to work.

It also needs an account, so what you write is tied to a sign-in. For an email to a friend that hardly matters. For a contract, a medical note or anything under a confidentiality agreement, it is worth a moment of thought.

Sensible habits if you use it

  • Turn it off on the sites where you handle confidential text, such as work systems, client files, health or legal portals.
  • Ask whether your employer or school has a rule about writing assistants. Many do.
  • Look at the training setting in your account and set it the way you want.
  • Delete documents you no longer need from its editor.

If you would rather nothing read along

Gramai works the other way round. It does nothing until you select text, right-click and pick an action. Only that selection is sent, only at that moment, and it is never stored or logged. There is no account to tie it to. On the Own key plan your text goes straight from your device to the AI provider you chose and never through us.

To be straight about our side: Gramai is a small product from KROX GROUP DOO. We hold no SOC 2 report and no ISO certificate. On Free, Basic and Pro your selection passes through our server to OpenAI and back. The privacy policy spells out every step, and the comparison with Grammarly sets the two side by side.

Questions people ask

Is Grammarly safe to use?

For most people, yes. It is an established product whose security page lists independent audits and certifications, and whose trust center says it does not sell the content you give it. What is left is a personal choice: whether you want a tool that receives your text while you type it.

Does Grammarly read everything I type?

It receives the text in the places where it is switched on, because that is how it can underline suggestions as you write. Its privacy policy describes this as the content you upload or enable its products to access. You can turn it off for a site in the extension.

Does Grammarly sell my data?

Grammarly's trust center says it does not and will not sell the content you upload to its products, and that it makes money from subscriptions.

Does Grammarly use my writing to train AI?

Grammarly's trust center says you can opt out of your content being used to train its models, with a setting in your account. If that matters to you, check that setting after you sign up.

Is Gramai safer than Grammarly?

It is different more than it is safer. Gramai sends only the text you select, only when you run an action, and stores none of it. It has no accounts. It is also a small product without the independent security certifications Grammarly lists. Which of those matters more is your call.
