Grammarly vs ChatGPT for fixing grammar
Grammarly is a writing assistant. Once it is installed it sits in the fields you type in and underlines what it would change, as you write.
ChatGPT is a chat window. You paste your text in, ask it to fix the grammar, and copy the answer back to where you were writing.
Both will get a paragraph clean. They differ in where the work happens, how much of your wording survives, and what you have to do each time.
Side by side
| What we are comparing | Grammarly | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| How you use it | It runs while you type and underlines suggestions in the field. You accept them one at a time. | You switch to the chat, paste the text, type what you want done, then copy the result back. |
| What comes back | Separate suggestions, each with a short reason. You can see every change before you take it. | A whole new version of the passage. Unless you ask, it does not list what it changed, and it may reword more than you wanted. |
| Where it works | Inside the sites and apps it supports. Their own pages list browsers, desktop and mobile. | In its own window or app. Your text has to travel there and back by copy and paste, and formatting rarely survives the trip. |
| Languages | English first. Their support pages also list more than 20 other languages for grammar and spelling. | Most widely used languages, and you can ask for the answer in a different one. |
| Account | Required. Their plans page asks you to create an account, the free plan included. | You can try it without one, with limits. Saved history and the paid plans need an account. |
| Price | A free plan and a paid Pro plan. Read the current prices on their plans page. | A free tier and paid plans. Read the current prices on OpenAI's pricing page. |
| Your text | It receives the content you let it access. Their trust center says they do not sell it, and that you can switch off its use for training in your account settings. | What you paste is kept in your chat history unless you use a temporary chat or delete it. Whether it helps train OpenAI's models is a setting in its data controls. |
The Grammarly column is taken from Grammarly's own pages, such as their plans page and trust center, as they read in October 2026. The ChatGPT column describes how ChatGPT works in general. Its current plans, limits and data settings are on OpenAI's pricing page and in its privacy policy. Check both yourself before you decide.
Which one fits
Pick Grammarly if you want a coach beside you. It suits long documents, people who like to see each suggestion and decide, and anyone who wants mistakes caught before the sentence is even finished.
Pick ChatGPT if you want to work a passage over. You can ask why something was wrong, ask for three other ways to say it, or have it shorten a whole page. The price is the trip: another tab, a prompt to type, a paste, a copy and a paste back, every time.
The third way: the same AI, without the trip
Gramai puts an AI model of the same kind behind your right-click menu. Select the text where it already is, right-click, pick Gramai and Fix grammar. The corrected text replaces the selection in the same field. No second tab and no prompt to write.
- Fix grammar corrects real mistakes and keeps your wording. A sentence with nothing wrong in it comes back untouched.
- Make professional, Make friendly and Make concise are there for when you do want the wording changed. Translate covers 30+ languages.
- Nothing runs until you ask. There are no underlines and nothing reads along.
- No account. Your selection is sent only when you run an action, and it is never stored or logged.
- 10 actions free on every installation, then $2.99 a month. If you already have an API key, the Own key plan is $4.99 once.
What it does not do: it will not explain a rule, hold a conversation about your draft or score a document. For that, the two tools above are the right ones. The Gramai and Grammarly comparison and the how-to guide have the details.
10 actions to try on every installation. No card, no account. Also for Firefox, Mac and Windows. See the plans.
Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT better than Grammarly for grammar?
They do different jobs. ChatGPT is very good at returning a clean version of a passage you paste in, in almost any language. Grammarly is better when you want mistakes pointed out one by one while you are still typing. For fixing a finished paragraph, both get you there.
Can ChatGPT replace Grammarly?
For correcting text you have already written, largely yes, as long as you do not mind pasting it in and copying the answer back. It does not replace the underlines that turn up as you type, because ChatGPT only sees what you paste into it.
Does ChatGPT change my writing style when it fixes grammar?
It can. Asked to fix grammar, a chat model often rewords sentences that had nothing wrong with them. Telling it to correct mistakes only and keep your wording helps. Fix grammar in Gramai is built to do exactly that every time.
Can I fix grammar with AI without copying and pasting?
Yes. With Gramai you select the text where it is, right-click and pick Fix grammar. The corrected text replaces the selection in the same field. It works in Chrome and Firefox, and in any app on Mac and Windows.
Can I use my ChatGPT subscription in Gramai?
No. A ChatGPT subscription and an OpenAI API key are separate things that OpenAI bills separately. Gramai needs no key at all on Free, Basic and Pro. The Own key plan takes an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and several other providers.
